Installing RetroRelay

From your phone's browser

1. Open the web browser on your phone.
2. Go to this address using the URL bar or the 'Go To' feature:
   http://api.retrorelay.app/get
3. Your phone should recognise the download as an installable Java app right away.
4. Follow the install process, and approve permissions when prompted.

Make sure to include the api. prefix, which stays on plain http:// so retro phones can reach it. The main site at retrorelay.app always serves HTTPS, and retro phones don't understand it.

From your computer

Move the app across with a USB cable or over Bluetooth. Start by downloading both files from the buttons at the bottom of this panel.

Over a USB cable

1. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable, and use your file explorer or the phone manufacturer's software to find your phone's files and folders.
2. Copy both files into your phone's storage. Any folder reachable from the file manager on your phone will do. Many phones have a dedicated "Applications" or "Downloads" folder.
3. Disconnect your phone from your computer.
4. On your phone, browse to the .jad file with the file manager and open it.
5. Follow the install process, and approve permissions when prompted.

Over Bluetooth

1. Pair your phone with your computer over Bluetooth.
2. Send both files to your phone. It should show a prompt telling you it is receiving files.
3. On your phone, open the .jad file from the received-files folder or messaging inbox it arrived in.
4. Follow the install process, and approve permissions when prompted.

For Nokias with a 128 KB limit on app size

For a small set of early Nokia phones with a 128 KB limit on app size, we provide a 'Lite' version of RetroRelay. To fit under the limit it leaves out QR-code scanning and the Calendar integrations, and draws its screens without icons. Everything else works exactly as it does in the standard app.

Updates handle themselves

On every launch, RetroRelay quietly asks the server whether a new version is available. If one is, all you have to do is press the 'Update' key, and your phone will show the same install prompt as the first install.

During the install process, your phone may show "Would you like to maintain application data?" or a similar prompt. Please select "Yes"; otherwise your phone will wipe its RetroRelay data and you will have to re-pair your phone here.
